Biosensor-equipped glasses could monitor diabetes through tears

Image
Brazilian and US scientists have developed a glasses-based biosensor capable of measuring blood glucose levels through a person’s tears, offering a less invasive test for diabetics. Glucose levels need to be frequently monitored in people with diabetes, a disease that affects 62 million people in the Americas and 380 million worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), diabetes has been rising alarmingly in recent decades — with the fastest increase in low- and middle-income countries — and could affect 580 million people by 2035. Many people with the disease use a portable glycosometer to measure blood glucose levels by pricking their… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web https://ift.tt/2DsQJL2

FASTag deadline extended to 15 December; here’s everything you need to know

Image
Starting from 15 December, FASTag is going to be mandatory across a total of 525 toll plazas. This means all four-wheelers have to attach FASTag RFID stickers on their vehicle’s windscreens. Failing to do so will result in vehicle owners without the FASTag to pay double the toll fare as a form of penalty. A separate lane will be present at the plazas for non-FASTag vehicles. Earlier, the deadline was on 1 December that has been given an extension to 15 December, according to PTI , to provide citizens some more time to acquire the FASTags. FASTag sanctioned by the National Highway Authority of India. What is FASTag? The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) sanctioned the Electronic Toll Collection program using FASTag as a pilot project back in 2014. It was implemented for the first time in the Delhi-Mumbai stretch of the Golden Quadrilateral towards the end of 2014. Aimed at making toll plaza payments on highways automatic with the ‘One Nation One Tag’ mission, it will also

Blue Whale heart rates may drop to only twice a minute during deep dives

Image
Blue whales have a flair for paradox. They live in water but breathe air. They’re enormous — the biggest creatures that have ever lived, as far as anyone knows — but subsist almost entirely on tiny krill. And as new research reveals, even the animal’s dunk tank-size heart jumps between extremes. In a study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a team of researchers for the first time attached an electrocardiogram tag to a free-diving blue whale to trace its heart rate. They found that the rate ranged as low as two beats per minute and as high as 37. Such numbers paint a picture of an animal frequently pushing its own limits and suggest that the whale is not only the largest animal ever but perhaps as large as an animal with a circulatory system can possibly be. To learn the secrets of the blue whale’s heart, Jeremy Goldbogen, a marine biologist at Stanford University, led a team that attached a noninvasive suction-cup tag to a blue whale in Monter

This USB-C battery that can fully charge a 15-inch MacBook Pro is $100 for Black Friday

The Black Friday sales on the games we actually loved this year

Astronomers spot stellar black hole so massive, it 'shouldn't exist'

Image
In an unexpected discovery, astronomers have spotted a black hole in the Milky Way galaxy that's so large, it defies existing models of how stars and galaxies evolve. The black hole in question, which researchers have dubbed 'LB-1', is roughly 15,000 light-years from Earth, and has a mass that's 70 times that of our Sun, claims the study published in  Nature . The Milky Way is thought to contain stellar black holes that number around 100 million. And LB-1 is twice as large as the largest stellar-mass black hole that scientists imagined possible,  according to  lead researcher and astronomer Jifeng Liu from the National Astronomical Observatory of China. "Black holes of such mass should not even exist in our galaxy, according to most of the current models of stellar evolution," Liu said in a statement . "LB-1 is twice as massive as what we thought possible. Now theorists will have to take up the challenge of explaining its formation." So far, res

Twitter won’t delete user accounts till it figures out how to memorialise the accounts of the dead

Image
A couple of days ago, Twitter announced that it will start deleting accounts of users who have been inactive for at least six months. Users had already started getting warning emails from the company regarding the same. Twitter said this was being done to cleap up Twitter, but as a bonus, it would also free up a tonne of usernames. While the plan sounds great, it appears there's a small hitch. As per a recent series of tweets , the company is halting this process and will only restart it after it has found a way to memorialise the accounts of deceased users. The company must have realised, following feedback from users, that it cannot just delete those accounts without appearing insensitive. (Also read:  Twitter intends to deactivate all accounts that have been inactive for at least six months ) The process of deleting inactive accounts will be resumed as it is a part of their Inactive account policy. Rapid warming of Indo-Pacific Ocean cited as reason for rainfall decline over Northern India

Image
Rapid warming of the Indo-Pacific ocean could be the reason behind erratic rainfall patterns with heavy rains pummeling some parts of the world while others, including north India, experiencing declines, a new study has said. The study, led by Roxy Mathew Koll of the Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) warned that warming of the ocean has altered the most dominant mode of weather fluctuation originating in the tropics, known as the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO), which has reduced rainfall in northern India between the months of November and April. "The rainfall pattern across the globe is likely changing due to rapid warming of the Indo-Pacific Ocean," it said, adding that the changes in the MJO behaviour have increased the rainfall over northern Australia, west Pacific, the Amazon basin, southwest Africa and southeast Asia (Indonesia, Philippines and Papua New Guinea). "At the same time these changes have brought a decline in rainfall over ce

Scientists may have discovered a fifth fundamental 'force of nature,' they’re calling it X17

Image
So far, scientists — particularly physicists — have been going about research assuming that the physical world stands on four pillars — the four forces that control the natural world. If you were thinking 'earth, wind, water, fire', have another go. The forces controlling the world, and by extension, the visible universe, are gravity, electromagnetism, weak nuclear forces, and strong nuclear forces. Research from scientists at the Institute for Nuclear Research at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Atomki) could be pointing to another, previously undiscovered "force" in nature. They "watched" an energetic (excited) helium atom release energy by emitting light, before returning to its unexcited state. During this process, the particles seemed to split at an unusual angle in repeated studies — always a 115-degree-angle. This phenomenon involving helium has no fitting explanation basis the four known forces that govern the natural world. The output of photo

Space travel, long-term exposure to microgravity cause a 'leaky' gut in astronauts: Study

Image
Space travel can disrupt the functioning of the robust cell barrier that lines our intestines to prevent bacteria, fungi, and viruses from invading the rest of our bodies, according to a study. Researchers from the University of California (UC), Riverside in the US noted that the microgravity environment encountered in space has profound effects on human physiology, leading to clinical symptoms and illnesses including gastroenteritis. They suggest that this can greatly increase the risk of infections, and chronic inflammatory conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, Type-1 diabetes, and liver disease. Previous studies have shown that microgravity weakens the human immune system, in addition to increasing the intestinal disease-causing ability of food-borne bacteria such as salmonella. Twitter’s threaded conversation features from its twttr prototype spotted on web

Conversations on Twitter look weird and when there are too many replies to the original tweet, it gets more cluttered. To fight that, Twitter introduced a thin grey line to denote a continuous conversation and then started working on a separate prototype app for iOS called Twttr to test radical ideas. Some of those ideas were pushed to the main Twitter app and now, some of the new features are being seen on the web interface. Representational image.
