Facebook Messenger just got a cleaner design by killing Discover and chatbots

Facebook Messenger is getting a facelift with a simpler, more streamlined design. Granted, we already knew that given the changes were on the way given they were announced way back in 2018, but today we got our first glimpse at what the final product might look like, courtesy of TechCrunch. The big picture: The Discover tab is disappearing, and chatbots are being curtailed. How many times have you actually used the Discover tab? If you’re like me, probably not much at all; I’d frankly all but forgotten it was there. The actress and singer posted the request on her Instagram on Friday night. “Was incredibly excited to launch ‘Lizzie’ on D+ and my passion remains,” Duff wrote. “However, I feel a huge responsibility to honor the fans’ relationship with Lizzie who, like me, grew up seeing themselves in her. You can now post Facebook’s trippy 3D photos without Portrait mode

Image
Facebook‘s trippy 3D photos are about to become much more accessible. The company first introduced the feature back in 2018, using depth data from your phone’s portrait mode to provide a nifty parallax effect to your images. It helped make images pop while scrolling through your news feed, and though it’s something of a gimmick, it’s still pretty cool. Problem was, it only worked if you’d activated portrait mode for that particular image. That’s no longer a constraint. Facebook is now able to create 3D images without your phone’s portrait mode. Instead, the company uses AI to calculate depth – … This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: Facebook from The Next Web https://ift.tt/2VD8py1

The Internet Archive’s VHS Vault will send you on a 90s nostalgia trip

They live on The VHS Vault , and as of this writing, there are more than 20,000 recordings you can peruse. A lot of the recordings are from the 90s, which is when I was a kid, so I’ve found a lot of stuff that has given me all sorts of nostalgic feels. Indian women scientists stress on pay gaps, equality, fair policies in research

Image
As the country marks the National Science Day on Friday, many leading Indian women scientists have stressed on the need for the right kind of support, equality, and gender-fair policies in the field of research. National Science Day is celebrated on 28 February each year commemorating Indian physicist C V Raman's discovery in 1928 of the Raman effect — the scattering of photons or light particles by matter. Raman received a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. Of the 607 Nobel medals awarded so far in scientific disciplines globally, just 20 have gone to women. Noting that a career in science is a demanding and tough option, Rupamanjari Ghosh, Vice-Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University, Greater Noida said there are additional barriers — often unintentional and unconscious ones — which are put up along the career path of women in science. "When such a career demands long hours, there are issues of lack of security and basic amenities that affect women more adversely than men in thi

Black hole explosion, 390 mn light years away, carves out crater from surrounding hot gas

Image
Astronomers have discovered the biggest explosion seen in the universe, originating from a supermassive black hole. Scientists reported Thursday that the blast came from a black hole in a cluster of galaxies 390 million light-years away. The explosion was so large it carved out a crater in the hot gas that could hold 15 Milky Ways, said lead author Simona Giacintucci of the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington. It’s five times bigger than the previous record-holder. Astronomers used NASA’s  Chandra X-Ray Observatory  to make the discovery, along with a European space observatory and ground telescopes. They believe the explosion came from the heart of the Ophiuchus cluster of thousands of galaxies: a large galaxy at the center contains a colossal black hole. Black holes don’t just draw matter in. They also blast out jets of material and energy. The first hint of this giant explosion actually came in 2016. Chandra images of the Ophiuchus galaxy cluster revealed an unusual curved

Stone tools show humans in India survived the cataclysmic Toba eruption 74,000 years ago

Image
About 74,000 years ago a volcanic eruption at what is now Lake Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia, created one of the most dramatic natural disasters of the past two million years. The plume of the eruption punched 30 kilometres or more into the sky, eventually blanketing much of India and parts of Africa in a layer of ash . Some scientists argue the eruption plunged Earth into a six-year “volcanic winter” followed by a thousand-year cooling of the planet’s surface. The long chill, the argument goes, may have resulted in the near extinction of our own species. One prominent theory says the eruption was a key event in human evolution. If this is right, the few human survivors in Africa would have developed more sophisticated social, symbolic and economic strategies to cope with the harsh conditions. These new strategies might then have enabled them to repopulate Africa and migrate into Europe, Asia and Australia by 60-50,000 years ago. It is still unclear how intense the fallout from the T

All of the 59 other cases in the U.S. had travelled from abroad or had been in close contact with those who travelled. Health officials have been on high alert for so-called community spread. Nerds love watching gargantuan kaiju beat the snot out of each other almost as much as they love watching professional wrestlers get greased up and brawl in the ring, which makes it surprisingly as hell that a movie like Paramount’s upcoming Rumble wasn’t made years ago. A Californian has contracted coronavirus from an unknown source

Image
Photo by Mario Tama/Getty Images A person in California has been diagnosed with the new coronavirus , despite having not having any “relevant travel history” or exposure to someone who was known to have the illness, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in an emailed statement today. This may be the first instance of “community spread,” which is a term the public health community uses to say the source of the illness is unknown, the CDC said in its release. It’s also possible that the patient was exposed to a person who’d traveled, and didn’t realize they were infected. The Washington Post reported this person was in Northern California. The CDC statement came just after President Donald Trump ended a press conference where he named Vice President Mike... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2I1hhoR

Trump: Don't Worry, We're Putting Mike Pence on This Coronavirus Thing

Image
The latest news from the White House on the ongoing spread of the novel coronavirus, which the Centers for Disease Control has warned is likely to hit the U.S. imminently, is not very reassuring: Vice President Mike Pence, whose poor epidemiological instincts helped fuel an HIV outbreak in his home state of Indiana,… Read more... from Gizmodo https://ift.tt/2T35RHv

How to get a refund for a played game from GOG

Image
Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. GOG today revealed a new refund policy in which it would accept returns on games for up to 30 days after the purchase, even if they’ve already been played. This would make it one of the few gaming platforms that I know of that accepts refunds for games that have been played to excess  — even Steam will only accept returns if you’ve played for less than roughly two hours. Samsung pledges to improve Galaxy S20 camera after reviewers see issues

Image
Photo by Dieter Bohn / The Verge Samsung has responded to some issues that early reviewers have found with the camera system on the new Galaxy S20 Ultra. The company says it’s working on an update to improve the camera, though it doesn’t acknowledge any specific problem or confirm when the fixes will be available. Mike Pence, who enabled an HIV outbreak in Indiana, will lead US coronavirus response

Image
Photo by Tom Brenner/Getty Images Vice President Mike Pence will take charge of the US response to the new coronavirus, President Donald Trump announced today. “Mike is not a czar,” Trump said. “I don’t view Mike as a czar.” Pence is not a public health expert, either. Instead, as governor of Indiana, he slashed public health spending and delayed the introduction of needle exchanges, which led to the state’s worst outbreak of HIV . He takes over from Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar who has been heading the White House coronavirus task force since the beginning of January. Yale epidemiologist Gregg Gonsalves, who conducted the research linking the Indiana HIV outbreak to Pence’s policies, tweeted that the decision “speaks to a lack of seriousness by the... Etsy tells sellers it’s going to advertise their goods and take a big cut of the sale

Image
Photo: Chris Welch / The Verge Etsy is going to start automatically advertising its sellers’ products and taking a fee — at least 12 percent — for every sale it refers. The ads will appear on “high-traffic sites” like Google, Facebook, and Pinterest, and they’ll be a requirement for shops doing more than $10,000 in sales each year. The change means a potentially big disruption for sellers that could lead to higher prices. Sellers are complaining in Etsy’s online forum. One seller called it a “BS money grab.” Others called it “absolutely unfair” and “the most ridiculous thing I have seen.” “This is just greed!” one seller wrote. “While us who work hard suffer.” All sellers will be opted into the advertising program when it goes live next month. Sellers making less than... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2TeWnb8

Samsung clarifies that a 'technical error' in its UK website exposed data of 150 customers

Image
Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said on Wednesday a “technical error” on its UK website temporarily exposed the personal data of about 150 users. The South Korean manufacturer said it stopped all users logging into the site after it became aware of the error, which it said has since been resolved and only affected the UK. Samsung did not say for how long the data was exposed. The error exposed information including names, telephone numbers, postal and email addresses and previous orders, Samsung said in a statement to Reuters . It did not expose credit card details, the company said. “We will be contacting those affected by the issue with further details,” Samsung said in the statement. As per a report by Android Authority , due to this data breach, Samsung Galaxy users got a "1-1" notifications from an app called  Find My Mobile,  a tool that allows users to connect with your devices in case it is stolen or lost. Several users reported this on Twitter to which Samsung repli
