Asteroid's moon gets a name before NASA's DART mission crashes into it in 2022

Image
By 2020, the American space agency NASA is planning to demonstrate its ability to deflect an asteroid – a strategy to ensure that Earth has the technological capability to defend itself from a potentially deadly asteroid collision in the uncertain future. The target of the mission will be the moon orbiting the near-Earth asteroid Didymos, which was recently given the name 'Dimorphos'. The mission will be both, the first full-scale demonstration of a planetary defense technology, and a first of its kind mission for NASA. Dimorphos is a near-Earth object – a class of asteroids and comets whose orbits place them within 30 million miles of Earth. This is an important classification of space rocks, and help the US government determine which asteroid threats to take seriously. Researchers have found that human and monkeys have similar thought patterns

Image
There might be much in common between humans and monkeys then what we already know. A study has revealed that there are similarities in the ways of thinking. The study published in the journal  Science Advances   was conducted by researchers from UC Berkeley, Harvard University and Carnegie Mellon University. The research was conducted on 100 participants across age groups, cultures and species. It divulged that indigenous Tsimane' people in Bolivia's Amazon rainforest, American adults and preschoolers and macaque monkeys have one thing in common. They all show, to varying degrees, a flair for "recursion," a cognitive process of arranging words, phrases or symbols in a way that helps convey complex commands, sentiments and ideas, reported  Science Daily . The interesting thing about the study is that the monkeys were found to perform far better in the tests than the researchers had predicted. "For the first time, we have strong empirical evidence about patte

Microsoft will ban Forza players who add the confederate flag to their digital cars

Environmental degradation may make pandemics more likely and less manageable

Image
Environmental degradation, including deforestation, land-use change and agricultural intensification, may make pandemics more likely and less manageable, according to a study. The study, published in the journal Environmental Science and Policy , presents the hypothesis that disease risks are "ultimately interlinked" with biodiversity and natural processes such as the water cycle. The researchers at the University of the West of England and the University of Exeter in the UK used a framework designed to analyse and communicate complex relationships between society and the environment. They conclude that maintaining intact and fully functioning ecosystems and their associated environmental and health benefits is key to preventing the emergence of new pandemics. The loss of these benefits through ecosystem degradation -- including deforestation, land use change and agricultural intensification -- further compounds the problem, according to the researchers. This happens by

Study finds patients infected with COVID-19 has an increased risk of getting strokes

Image
COVID-19 is significantly associated with an increased risk of strokes, according to a study which says patients infected with the novel coronavirus should undergo aggressive monitoring for the neurological condition. According to the researchers, including those from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in the US, COVID-19 infection is a risk factor for acute strokes. In the study, published in the American Journal of Neuroradiology , the scientists assessed patients presenting to six New York City hospitals for suspicion of stroke between March to April. "We conducted a retrospective case-control study of 41 cases and 82 control subjects matched by age, sex, and risk factors," the scientists wrote in the study. After adjusting for age, gender, and risk factors, the scientists found that COVID-19 infection had a significant independent association with acute ischemic stroke -- caused by a clot that blocks a blood vessel in the brain. Coronavirus Outbreak: NASA develops a PULSE pendant that is supposed to help keep your hands away from your face

The novel coronavirus can spread through surface contamination, that means if you touch a surface that has the virus and then touch your eyes, nose or mouth you can get infected. Hence, apart from wearing a mask outside and frequently washing our hands, health authorities have also prescribed people to keep our hands away from the face.   As it is quite difficult to do so in practice, a small team from NASA ’ s Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) has a pendant made. Known as PULSE, it is a 3-dimensional pendant   “ that pulses, or vibrates, when a person ’ s hand is nearing their face ” . A video clip on how the pendant functions have been uploaded on YouTube. As soon as you wear the pendant and reach for any part above the necklace, you will experience "haptic feedback from a vibration motor", simulating a nudge in your hands. This will readily remind you to keep your hands off of your face.   The video adds that the pendant works most efficiently when worn 6 inches below the chin.

Astronomers discover two super-Earth exoplanets, orbiting a star, 11 light-years away

Image
Astronomers have discovered two super-Earth exoplanets that are orbiting a star 11 light-years away from Earth. The results of the study were published in the journal Science . According to a report in CNN , the star, Gliese 887 is a small, dim red dwarf star with about half the mass of our sun, But due to its proximity, it is the brightest red dwarf in the sky and is one of the closest stars to our sun. The report added that a group of astronomers working on the Red Dots project observed the star using the European Southern Observatory in Chile for three months. The High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher, known as the HARPS spectrograph, detected two planets around Gliese 887. As per a report in SciTech Daily , researchers made use of the 'Doppler wobble' effect. The method enabled researchers to measure the tiny back and forth wobbles of the star caused by the gravitational pull of the planets. Study authors said that the regular signals correspond to orbits of 9

Astronomers observe light flare emerge from the collision of two black holes for the first time

Image
The collision between two black holes is known to send ripples in space and time but is not known to emit light – till now. Astronomers have now revealed that they saw a flare of light coming out when two black holes rapidly spun around each other before making a violent union. The astronomers claim that this is the first time they have seen a merger of black holes giving off light. A new study published in the journal  Physical Review Letters   says that the black holes may have just been in the right place at the right time because of which the researchers observed a flare of light. The research has been conducted by a team of scientists from Graduate Center, CUNY, Caltech’s Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) and the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), reported  SciTech Daily . When the celestial dance took place, the black holes were located inside a giant disc of gas and dust. What happened was that their merger created someth

Facebook says it will now label newsworthy content, activists argue 'new changes don't go nearly far enough'

Image
Last week, Facebook announced that it will start labeling newsworthy content that violates the social media company's policies, and label all posts and ads about voting with links to authoritative information, including those from politicians. A Facebook spokeswoman confirmed Reuters  that its new policy would have meant attaching a link on voting information to US President Donald Trump's post last month about mail-in ballots. Rival Twitter had affixed a fact-checking label to that post. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said in a live-streamed company townhall that Facebook would also ban ads that claim people from groups based on race, religion, sexual orientation or immigration status are a threat to physical safety or health. The policy changes come during a growing ad boycott campaign, called " Stop Hate for Profit ," that was started by several US civil rights groups after the death of George Floyd, to pressure the company to act on hate speech and misinfo

2020 iPhones won’t come with a power adapter or earbuds, says Kuo

Image
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge This year’s new iPhones might not have as much in the box as you’re used to. According to well-connected analyst Ming-chi Kuo, Apple is planning to stop including a power adapter and EarPods in the box with 2020 models, and will even remove the power adapter from the new iPhone SE’s packaging later this year. Kuo’s research note was reported on by AppleInsider , MacRumors , and 9to5Mac . Apple is attempting to offset the cost increases that come with upgrading the iPhone range to 5G, according to Kuo. Smaller packaging would be more eco-friendly and also reduce shipping costs, since more phones could fit into a single shipment. (Encouraging more sales of AirPods can’t hurt, either.) Right now Apple includes EarPods with all iPhones, a 5W... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/38e6q7l

NASA announces ‘Lunar Loo Challenge’ to come up with best space toilet for its future lander

Image
While space exploration is pretty amazing, one thing which seems to be bothering NASA when they send astronauts back to the moon is where will they go for bathroom breaks on reaching the lunar surface. National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA has announced the "Lunar Loo Challenge" to come up with the best space toilet for the agency's future human lander. According to a NASA statement , "While astronauts are in the cabin and out of their spacesuits, they will need a toilet that has all the same capabilities as ones here on Earth." NASA has subsequently called on the global community for their "novel design concepts for compact toilets that can operate in both microgravity and lunar gravity." As per a report in The Verge , NASA's Artemis programme, which aims to send the first woman and next man to Moon by 2024, needs to have a restroom that is versatile. According to the report, the restroom needs to work in orbit and also when
