NASA puts its Mars missions on time out for two weeks in October due to solar conjunction

Image
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will halt all its robotic Mars exploration efforts in October. There will be a communications blackout this month that may disrupt interplanetary communications. The blackout will be caused by solar conjunction — a period when the Earth and Mars will be invisible to each other due to the planets being on opposite sides of the Sun. According to NASA , the event occurs every two years for about two weeks. This year, the solar conjunction moratorium is between 2 October and 14 October, when Mars is within 2 degrees of the Sun. NASA will task its missions with homework during the “short vacation” as all spacecrafts will go “virtually incommunicado” during the period. The agency’s Perseverance rover will perform weather measurement and radar experiments. The rover, which landed in February, will also look for any dust devils passing by on the planet as well as listen for environmental sounds using its microphone. The official acc

Menstrual cups are cheaper, more sustainable than pads and tampons for women

Image
Every year in America, women spend at least US$2.8 billion on sanitary pads and tampons that can take hundreds of years to decompose . Is there a more economical and environmentally friendly way? To find out, we asked Susan Powers , a professor of sustainable environmental systems at Clarkson University about her work comparing the environmental impact of tampons, sanitary pads and menstrual cups. What is a menstrual cup? A menstrual cup is a type of reusable feminine hygiene product. It’s a small, flexible bell-shaped cup made of rubber or silicone that a woman inserts into her vagina to catch and collect menstrual fluid. It can be used for up to 12 hours, after which it is removed to dispose of the fluid and cleaned. The cup is rinsed with hot water and soap between each insertion and sterilized in boiling water at least once per period. A cup can last up to 10 years . Although menstrual cups have been around for decades, they historically have been less popular than pads or ta

Bajaj Chetak price hiked for the third time in 2021, making it India’s priciest electric scooter

Image
The Bajaj Chetak has witnessed yet another substantial hike in price – the third such increase in 2021 – that has made it the most expensive electric scooter on sale in India today. The ex-showroom price of the Bajaj Chetak in its home state of Maharashtra is now Rs 1,87,390; a significant increase on its ex-showroom price of Rs 1,44,987 up until a few months ago. Compared to its price at launch in 2020, the Chetak’s price has risen by well over 60 percent in less than two years’ time. The latest price hike was introduced after the Central government increased the FAME-II subsidy for electric two-wheelers , and under the revised national scheme, the Chetak is eligible for a substantially higher Rs 45,000 incentive. However, despite the increase in subsidy, the latest price hike means customers still pay roughly the same amount of money for the Chetak on-road as before. Even with the higher FAME-II subsidy factored in, the Chetak’s on-road price in Maharashtra is Rs 1,48,452, which i

India reportedly in talks with Taiwan to establish $7.5 billion semiconductor plant amid chip shortage

In order to address the global semiconductor chip shortage issue, India is in talks with Taiwan. According to an exclusive report by Bloomberg , this could bring chip manufacturing to South Asia along with tariff reductions on components for producing semiconductors by the end of the year. The Bloomberg report said that officials in New Delhi and Taipei have met in recent weeks to discuss a deal that would bring a chip plant worth an estimated $7.5 billion to India to secure supply of semiconductors for everything – from 5G devices to electric cars. World leaders and executives at multinational corporations have been worried about the global scarcity of semiconductors, which has hit manufacturing and sales in numerous countries and no early solution is in sight. What caused the semiconductor shortage? Semiconductors, or chips, have properties that are somewhere between conductors and insulators. Usually made of silicon, they are used to power a wide range of devices - cars, laptop

It is protected against scratches and smudges by a ceramic glass and oleophobic coating. At its core is Apple’s previous flagship A14 Bionic chip that is still powerful enough. It was their flagship chip about a

Toyota Yaris discontinued in India, set to be replaced by rebadged Maruti Suzuki Ciaz (Toyota Belta)

Image
Toyota has announced the discontinuation of the Toyota Yaris sedan in India, as it gears up to launch a new model in the midsize sedan segment. The Yaris has been discontinued with effect from 27 September, with Toyota saying ‘preparations are underway to launch new models’ in 2022. Launched in April 2018, the Yaris was positioned as a premium-priced rival to the likes of the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Skoda Rapid and Volkswagen Vento, but failed to make a mark in the segment and has been pulled off the shelves in a little over three years since its launch. To assure owners of the Yaris across the country of continued aftersales support, Toyota has said it will ensure availability of spare parts for the sedan in India for at least the next 10 years. In its three-year stint, the Toyota Yaris couldn't make an impact on midsize sedan buyers for several reasons. Prime among them was the fact that the Yaris was not an all-new model, but one that had been on sale i

Realme Watch 2 Pro Review: A feature-packed fitness watch with GPS for under Rs 5,000

Image
Realme recently launched their next generation of fitness watches in India, and there’s a new member in the family with a Pro suffix. The Realme Watch 2 Pro boasts of some interesting features such as a larger display and built-in GPS at an affordable price point. It has been keeping me company for the past few weeks, and here’s what I think of this new fitness watch. What I liked about the Realme Watch 2 Pro: Lightweight and comfortable to wear The standard rectangular design isn’t particularly eye-catching, but yes, the display is larger than usual. The build quality is decent, and the plastic body helps keep the weight down to 40 grams (with straps). The silicone straps feel quite comfortable around the wrist, and there was no skin irritation despite wearing it throughout the day and even to bed. The straps have the standard 22 mm width, which is a good thing, as you can replace them with any third-party 22 mm straps. Larger display with decent sharpness With the Watch 2 Pro,
